I have tons of writing to do, and most of the time. I tend to distract myself by checking out different fonts and trying to customize my software. Even use my mobile instead of writing.

Then I found free-write, it’s distract-free software that helps you write without being distracted.

But does it actually? If you have a computer, like Windows or Mac. You can download it, but the question is how will you really use it and how will it keep you from being distracted?

Real way of using free-write.

I will be more frank here: distraction-free software doesn’t actually work the way you think. It doesn’t really make you write thousands of words without being distracted. You will eventually have to check the meanings of words or search for something, during which you will surely stumble on something that will take your attention away.

Then what should you do?

Instead of writing the main work on the free-write app, here’s what you have to do. There will be a timer; use it and use the random font so every time you open it, there will be different fonts. Write down a short, easy-wording short. Don’t use abstruse words. To make it more attention-absorbing, try to write down a short about your novel's side character, or if you're writing an article, make it your first draft.

1. don’t care about mistakes.

2. Don’t try to overthink; just write.

3. Express yourself, and don’t care about the timer.

When you're done with it, go start writing your own novel or article. There’s a little possibility you will get distracted and keep your phone away.

An Offline Dictionary

First, download a dictionary. You can find Longman, Oxford, Cambridge, even Collin advance learner’s dictionary software online for free. This will help keep your attention away from seeing definitions online, which probably might lead to opening something else.

Offline Information

If you want to have information about something, such as old kings and queens or sometimes about old systems, etc., we can use Wikipedia (although Wiki can be used offline, it is a big hassle), but there is another option. You can use microsoft encarta, it has both a dictionary and information regarding history, etc. You can also use britannica software. Both of them can be found online for free.

Why offline?

At first, it may seem like this software is going to distract you, too. Gladly, they won’t. Free-write app can be found here: https://freewrite.io/
